WHAT IS “CONSCIOUS EATING?”

Have you ever eaten a meal, only to be hungry an hour later, and start scouring the fridge and cabinets?

Why does this happen?

For many, the answer is simple:  Your brain and body have not been consciously aware of having eaten.
In fact, in order to have your brain fully register pleasure and satiety, it needs to be present and engaged in the eating experience.
That means slowing down while you eat, chewing more, and not multitasking or being distracted while you eat.
Easy to say, harder to do, I know….but important, nonetheless.

Another reason you might be hungry an hour later is because you’ve been focusing on “filler foods” instead of foods that give you full-body satiety.
So, if you’re filling up on foods that don’t contain at least some fat, protein and fiber, you’re very likely going to be hungry again soon after.
This is because you filled your tummy only.

When you add healthy fats like avocado, nuts and seeds and salmon, along with lean proteins like tofu, fish, poultry and meat, you are more likely to experience that sweet-spot of tummy fullness and full-body satiety.

You will have that wonderful feeling of pushing yourself away from the table and moving on with your day for hours, without thinking about food again.
Deciding to be a conscious eater is more than just being mindful and intentional with what you eat.  It has to do with how you eat, but also your thoughts, beliefs and perceptions about food, and eating in general.

It also has to do with how you nourish and feed yourself;  be it meal planning, following a particular style of eating, (due to certain dietary or medical concerns), changing how often or what you cook and prepare. These are all under the umbrella of conscious eating.
There is research that shows Americans make over 200 food-related decisions a day, but are only aware of about 14 of them.
How many have you been aware of today?

How many have you been aware of today?

With all this happening on a meta-level, it’s no wonder we’re so decision- fatigued about how to nourish and feed ourselves.

That’s why I felt it was so important to put together an event that incorporated all of these nuances and aspects of conscious eating that hadn’t been bundled into one format before.
